What are the benefits of Virgin Money Spot?

It’s the easiest way to spot people you know. You can top-up your Virgin Money Spot Wallet and instantly send money to any of your friends just by using their phone number. And it gets better, we’ve partnered with some great merchants to make buying stuff a breeze by scanning the QR code or wiCode to pay.

How does it work?

The Virgin Money Spot app lets you spot friends on your contact list. You can also enter their phone number. When it comes to sending them money, you can spot them from your Virgin Money Spot Wallet or from your linked 3D secure bank card. The cash you send goes straight into their Virgin Money Wallet.

To get started, register and link your online 3D enabled card or bank account. Voila. Now you can spot anyone with a South African bank account. You just need their cell phone number.

How do I install the Virgin Money Spot app?

Download it for free from the App Store, the Google Play store or the Huawei AppGallery. Just type ‘Virgin Money Spot’ in the search bar.

How do I register?

Simple.

  5. Answer a few security questions, then you’re good to go

Heads up. The Virgin Money Spot app only works on Android, iOS, and Huawei smartphones.

Why was my account deactivated on registration?

Sometimes when registering a new account some information doesn’t add up and the account gets deactivated or soft-locked. Don’t stress. It sounds complex but it’s a pretty quick fix. Simply send us a copy of your South African ID and a selfie (make sure it’s a nice and clear picture of yourself) to kyc_fica@virginmoney.co.za and one of our customer support agents will help you reactivate your account.

My friend isn’t registered for Virgin Money Spot. Can I still send them money?

Of course. Your friend will get an SMS with a unique link that’ll do one of two things:

  1. If they’re an iOS or Android user, they’ll be sent to the applicable store to download the app.
  2. If they’re neither an iOS, Android or Huawei user, they’ll be sent to a mobile site to claim their cash.

Heads up. If your friend doesn’t register within 7 days, the money will be reversed back into your Virgin Money Spot Wallet.

When will my friend see the money in their account?

How do I know my friend got the money?

Depending on the banks you are with this may take around 1 to 2 working days. You can also view the status of your transaction within the app. One black tick means your payment has been made but not received. Two green ticks mean the payment has been successful and funds will settle in 1 to 2 working days.

Yikes. We’ve all been there. For now, the only way to fix this is to ask them for the money back. You can send them a Request Pay, give them a call, send them a text, whatever.

Pretty please (with a cherry on top) always double-check that you’re sending money to the right friend before confirming the payment by entering your PIN.

security

What is 3D secure?

This is one of the security non-negotiables mandated by the Cards Association. It makes online transactions more secure by checking that the person using the card owns it. No sneaky stuff.

It requests information after the card has been loaded for payment that only the cardholder would know like the OTP that gets sent to the cardholder’s cell phone.

For a good read on 3D secure, you can take a look at this article here.

Is it safe to use Virgin Money Spot?

Definitely. We use the highest level of encryption and authentication mechanisms to keep your personal information supermega top-secret.

How can I safeguard my Spot account?

Our golden rule: NEVER SHARE YOUR PIN with anyone. That goes for our employees and maybe even your mom.

Why do I need to add my ID number on the app?

The Virgin Money Spot app is a secure payment application. Just like you, we think fraudsters and charlatans suck, so to make sure you’re hard-earned cash is kept as safe as can be, we need to verify that you are who you say you are. That means that your account needs to go through the FICA process.

charges / fees

How much does it cost to Spot someone?

It’s FREE to spot a friend or a merchant.

Is there a charge to cash-out funds from my wallet?

Nope. It’s FREE to cash-out.

Why am I being charged R3 when I link my card?

So, just like other payment services, there’s a teeny tiny pre-authorization fee that your bank needs to reserve. Ours is R3. In a nutshell, this checks that your card is valid. Don’t panic, the amount is never deducted off your card, your bank just holds onto it and it gets released back to your account in 7 days. Promise.

Does it cost me anything to have a Virgin Money Spot account?

Nope. There are no monthly fees or sneaky limited transaction fees. It’s FREE to use the Virgin Money Spot app.

errors / support

Why haven’t I received a verification code?

There may be network problems or you may have entered a wrong number. If you still don’t receive a code, chat to our customer support team at help.virginmoney.co.za.

What must I do if I forgot my pin?

If you’re logged into the app, just select ‘Account settings’ and ‘Forgot PIN’ from the menu. If you’re not logged in, you need to login and hit ‘Forgot PIN’ when prompted to enter it. If there’s anything else we can help you with please give us a shout at help.virginmoney.co.za.

What do I do when it says authentication service currently down?

We authenticate all cards when you link your card to the Virgin Money Spot app. We use banking and payment gateway services to do this. Sometimes, these services catch a wobbly and experience technical issues. When this happens, we suggest making a cuppa and trying again in about an hour.

Why am I not receiving my OTP when linking my card?

There are a few potential reasons why you’re not receiving your OTP. Your bank sends the OTP required to link your card using 3D Secure. Please check which phone number your OTP is being sent to by your bank. Another potential reason could be a slow cell phone network. It’s important to remember that OTPs are only valid for 60 seconds. So, if you’ve asked for the OTP to be resent more than once, please use the last OTP you received.

If none of that works you could always try switching your phone off and on again. That generally does the trick.
